Is the MacBook Neo Good for Nursing School? (2026)

The MacBook Neo can be a great nursing-school laptop, on one condition: your program must allow Macs for proctored exams. Here is how to be sure.

Is the MacBook Neo Good for Nursing School? (2026)

Yes, the MacBook Neo can be a good nursing-school laptop, if your program allows Macs for proctored exams. Examplify, the exam software many nursing programs use, lists the Neo's A18 chip as supported, and the Neo's 16-hour battery rating and 2.7-pound weight suit long clinical days. At $599 with the student discount, it's also one of the cheapest ways into a Mac. Some programs still require Windows for testing no matter what the software supports, though, so check your program's written rules before you buy.

What nursing school asks of a laptop

Nursing isn't a computing-heavy major. You won't render video or compile code. You will take a lot of secure, proctored exams, work in web-based clinical platforms, watch lecture videos, write care plans, and carry the laptop between class, the library, and clinical placements. That puts exam software first, followed by a webcam and microphone for proctoring, battery life, weight, and reliability.

Check the exam software first

Examplify, from ExamSoft, runs on macOS. Its minimum system requirements ask for an Intel, A18, or M-series chip, 4GB of RAM, 4GB of free storage, and a screen of at least 1280 by 768 with scaling at 100 percent. ExamSoft recommends 8GB of RAM when your school turns on its ExamID or ExamMonitor proctoring, which is exactly what the Neo has. Examplify won't run in a virtual machine, so running Windows on the Neo won't get you around a Windows-only rule.

The rest of the nursing software stack works on a Mac too. Elsevier's Evolve, SimChart, and Shadow Health run in Safari, which also happens to be the lightest browser on the Neo. HESI exams use the Elsevier Secure Browser, which has a Mac version. ATI lists Macs as supported and proctors through Proctorio, Respondus LockDown Browser, or PSI depending on your school, and Kaplan's lockdown browser is built on Respondus, which runs on macOS.

So on paper, the Neo runs everything. The catch is policy. Many nursing handbooks require a Windows laptop for proctored testing regardless of what the software supports, and at least one program, Duquesne University's School of Nursing, lists MacBook Neos as not recommended without giving a reason. Read your program's written computer requirements or email the department, and get the answer in writing.

Get it in writing first

Before you spend $699 (or $599 with Apple's education pricing), confirm in writing that your program approves Macs for proctored exams, including Examplify, HESI, and any lockdown browser it uses.

Hold off on macOS 27

ExamSoft supports macOS Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe but hasn't certified macOS 27 yet. Don't install it, or any beta, until your program confirms Examplify works with it. Michigan State University's IT team warns that going back to an older macOS means erasing the whole Mac.

Where the MacBook Neo helps

  • Rated for up to 16 hours, the battery covers class, the library, and clinical prep on one charge. Our MacBook Neo review digs into real-world battery.
  • At 2.7 pounds, it fits in a bag next to your textbooks and stethoscope without weighing you down.
  • Speed isn't a concern. The A18 Pro handles browsers, lecture video, documents, and exam software, and nursing never asks for more.
  • Proctored exams that watch you through the webcam get a 1080p camera and built-in microphones to work with.
  • macOS updates come only from Apple, so there are no third-party driver updates to babysit, and malware is uncommon (here's whether you need antivirus on a Neo).
  • If you have an iPhone, photos of a whiteboard or a drug chart reach the Neo through AirDrop in seconds.

Where it falls short

If your program requires Windows

Buy a Windows laptop that meets Examplify's requirements instead. Our MacBook Neo alternatives lay out solid options at similar prices.

Frequently asked questions

Does Examplify work on a Mac?

Yes, on Intel, A18, and M-series Macs running a supported version of macOS. It won't run on a Chromebook or Linux. It can run on an iPad, but only if your school turns that option on.

Should a nursing student get an iPad instead?

As a companion, yes. Some schools enable Examplify on iPad, but many nursing programs still expect a laptop. The safest pairing is a laptop for exams and an iPad for handwritten notes.

Which MacBook Neo should a nursing student buy?

The 256GB model at $599 with education pricing is enough if you keep readings and notes in iCloud or Google Drive. Pay $699 for the 512GB model if you download lecture videos to watch offline or want Touch ID for quicker logins, which adds up when you sign in to school portals all day.

Can I use an external monitor during a proctored exam?

Examplify allows only one display, so disconnect any extra screens. Some schools let you take the exam on a single external monitor instead of the built-in screen, but you can't change displays once the exam starts, so set it up and test it in a mock exam first. Check your school's rules, because they vary.

What should I do before exam day?

Update Examplify, download the exam file as soon as your school releases it, and run any practice exam your program offers to confirm everything works. On the day, charge the Neo fully, quit every other app, and keep it on power if you can.

Does Respondus LockDown Browser work on the MacBook Neo?

Yes. It runs natively on Apple silicon and supports macOS Tahoe. We couldn't find confirmation that it supports macOS 27 yet, so check your school's or Respondus's compatibility notes before updating, which is one more reason to hold off on that update during the semester.

Is AppleCare+ worth it for nursing school?

If you'll carry the Neo to class and clinicals every day, it's worth considering, because it covers accidental damage like drops and spills that the standard warranty doesn't. Our MacBook Neo support guide breaks down what it covers and costs.
