Touch Is Coming to the Mac, Just Not the Neo

The MacBook Neo isn't a touchscreen, and the rumored Neo 2 likely won't be either. Here is the logic behind it, and which Mac is finally getting touch.

Touch Is Coming to the Mac, Just Not the Neo

No, the MacBook Neo doesn't have a touchscreen, and the MacBook Neo 2 isn't expected to get one either. Touch is coming to the Mac, possibly within weeks, but on a new OLED MacBook Pro that will cost more than twice as much as the Neo. If you want to tap a screen, an iPad is still Apple's answer, and with macOS 27 it works better than ever as a touch display for the Neo.

Why the MacBook Neo doesn't have a touchscreen

Cost comes first. The Neo exists to be Apple's cheapest Mac, and a touch layer adds real money to a display. It's one of many tradeoffs behind the Neo's low price, alongside the unlit keyboard and the mechanical trackpad, both covered in our full MacBook Neo review.

macOS also isn't built for fingers. Its menus and buttons are small and dense, designed for a cursor, while iPadOS was built for touch from the start. If you're switching from a Windows touchscreen laptop, this is the biggest habit to unlearn.

And Apple has argued against touch on laptops for years. At its "Back to the Mac" event in October 2010, Steve Jobs said touch surfaces "don't want to be vertical", because reaching up to a screen for long stretches is "ergonomically terrible." The industry's name for it is gorilla arm.

Will the MacBook Neo 2 have a touchscreen?

Almost certainly not. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first predicted a touch panel for the second-generation Neo in September 2025, as a way to compete with touchscreen Chromebooks. In March 2026, around the Neo's launch, he walked it back, saying his "latest industry checks suggest Neo 2 may not adopt it." Bloomberg's Mark Gurman went further: he'd "be shocked if a touch screen comes to the Neo in the next three years," as MacRumors reported.

The latest Neo 2 rumors, also from Gurman, point to an A19 Pro chip, 12GB of memory, and new colors in 2027, with no mention of touch. Price explains it, as it does for the current model, especially after Apple's $100 price hike in June.

Touch is coming to the Mac, just not this one

Apple's first touchscreen Mac is expected to be a redesigned MacBook Pro with an OLED display, a Dynamic Island, and a thinner body, reportedly on M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Gurman reported on October 1 that it could arrive as early as October or slip to November. Some reports have floated "MacBook Ultra" as the name of a premium tier, but Apple hasn't confirmed anything. Touch is arriving at the top of the lineup as a premium feature, and the Neo sits at the opposite end.

Should you wait for the Neo 2 if you want touch?

No. A year of waiting for a feature the analysts say isn't coming is a bad bet. If touch matters, buy an iPad, which is Apple's actual touch device, or save for the OLED MacBook Pro. If touch on a laptop matters more to you than macOS, a touchscreen Windows 2-in-1 like the Surface is the obvious alternative, and our roundup of budget laptops we'd consider instead of the Neo includes a touchscreen pick.

How to get touch-style input on a MacBook Neo

Start with the trackpad. It's mechanical rather than Force Touch, but it handles pinch-to-zoom, swipes, and most of the gestures people reach for a touchscreen to do. Switch on three-finger drag and a few other trackpad tricks and it feels more direct.

The closer substitute is an iPad used as a second screen through Sidecar. It works with any iPad Pro, an iPad (6th generation or later), an iPad mini (5th generation or later), or an iPad Air (3rd generation or later), signed in to the same Apple Account as the Neo. You can draw and mark up documents on it with an Apple Pencil, which is handy for graphic design work on the Neo. With macOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Sidecar also lets you control Mac windows with your fingers far more fully than before, which is the closest the Neo gets to a touchscreen.

If your real goal is handwritten notes or annotated PDFs, an iPad on its own does that better than any touchscreen laptop. That's a big deal for nursing students and other note-heavy majors.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MacBook Neo work with Apple Pencil?

Not directly. No Mac supports Apple Pencil on its own screen. The only way to use one with the Neo is on an iPad connected through Sidecar.

Has any MacBook had a touchscreen?

No. The closest Apple came was the Touch Bar, a thin touch strip above the keyboard on some MacBook Pro models from 2016 to 2023. The OLED MacBook Pro expected this fall would be the first Mac with a touchscreen.

Can I add a touchscreen monitor to the MacBook Neo?

You can plug one in, but macOS has no built-in touchscreen support, so most touch monitors act as a basic pointer at best or need third-party drivers. An iPad through Sidecar is the better touch screen for a Mac.

Does the Neo's trackpad have Force Touch?

No. It's a mechanical trackpad that physically clicks, so you can't press harder to preview a link or look up a word. You can get that back by setting "Look up & data detectors" to a three-finger tap in System Settings, under Trackpad.
